A fast-growing, rough bark type Japanese Maple. The corky and jagged bark on older branches makes this variety extremely popular for bonsai work. The bark feature will begin to show when the tree is 3 to 4 years old. This variety is said to develop the pine bark at a younger age than 'Arakawa' but I have not observed a difference between the two varieties. 'Nishiki gawa' is also a fantastic choice for the landscape because of its fast, upright growth habit. The spring and summer leaves are green turning to bright orange red in the fall.
