Acer palmatum 'Nishiki Gawa'
The rough pine-like bark is the outstanding feature of this Japanese Maple. It has been likened to the bark of the Japanese black pine. The older the tree, the rougher the bark. This feature begins to develop in about three years. The bark of older trees becomes very thick and convoluted. This variety is highly coveted for bonsai work. The rough bark will give a young bonsai the appearance of being very old. All of our Nishiki gawa trees are grafted very low, near the crown. Leaf color is green in spring and summer turning bright yellow-orange in fall.
